Sailing Expedition and Meal Prep

A. As we prepare for our sailing expedition, consider and respond to the following:
  1. As you are aware, we are about to spend 4 days on board a sailboat living and working together. Give one example of good Expedition Behavior (EB) you intend to employ during our sailing expedition. Also describe any challenges you think the group will face during this expedition.
  2. What expectations do you have of this sailing expedition? Describe what you think it will be like during a typical day on board.  Identify what aspects of the experience you are looking forward to and what aspects you are concerned about.

B. You have learned of various potential health hazards related to food preparation in the backcountry. Hopefully you have become aware of the importance of hygiene while preparing food in the field.
  1. Identify three strategies you will include in your planning for our sailing expedition to reduce the potential for transference of disease while on our trip.
  2. As we begin preparing for our sailing expedition, think about a meal you have enjoyed in the past that you would describe as an excellent experience.
              a. Describe this meal.
              b. Identify what made this meal exceptional (i.e. the atmosphere, the company, the food, the presentation, the situation, etc.)
              c. Explain how you could incorporate aspects of your exceptional dining experience into your meal preparation while on our sailing expedition.

As always, I look forward to your posts.  Your response is due by Friday, October 18 at 9:00 am.

  1. Part A
    1. One example of EB that I plan to use more is offering help. On our first expedition I didn't offer my help as much as I would have liked and hope to work on that during this expedition.
    2. The only expectations that I have for this trip is for all of us to work of the key points that we missed on kayaking involving EB. I think a typical day on board will be crazy, filled with a lot of learning and teaching each other as well. My main concern will be putting what we have been taught in class into action, I have never been on a sailboat so I have no idea how anything works. I am looking forward to learning new things from not only Scott and Max, but fellow classmates as well.

    Part B
    1. Good hand washing, covering mouth when coughing/sneezing, as well as keeping food at the proper temperatures.
2a. I would have to say Thanksgiving meal.
    b. This is for the fact that the entire family is together enjoying a meal that we all helped to prepare in our own way.
    c. During meals, talking about our day and have each group help each other, even help other groups.

I would like to be more involved I feel that on the last trip I would tend to keep to myself when given the chance and I think I need to interact more with the group.

I am not sure what to expect on this trip besides I know it will be a great learning experience. I feel that the normal day on board the boats will be non stop learning and pushing ourselves out side of a comfort zones.

1 hand sanitizer will be essential.
2 making sure all cooking and food preparation areas are clean
3 keeping the food at the optimal temps to reduce the risk.
I think for me the best part about a meal is being able to connect with the people around me and just laughing and having a good time.

  3. 1a. I believe the challenges this group will face is not having enough space. The boats have pretty tight quarters and we will be very close to each other for very long periods of time. I think if we all stay mindful of that and be respectful of what little personal space we all have then it will go somewhat smoothly. The EB I hope to bring with me is trying to stay positive as much as possible, and hope it will help my group do the same.
2a. What I expect to get out of this expedition is a greater knowledge and confidence for navigation on the water, and enjoy sailing with the group. I am looking forward to the scenery and sailing the bigger boats, it has been a really long time since I have been out on the water in a big boat. I am a little concerned about the weather, I am hoping that the days will be sunny and warm, or at least most of them anyway.
1b. To help prevent the spread of potential disease, I plan on precooking most of the food and freezing it so we don’t have to bring any raw meats or veggies with us. Make sure your hands and food surfaces are clean before preparing food, and simply paying attention to what you are doing.
2b. I have always loved traditional meals, when my mom prepares food for some of the clients she tries to incorporate a little bit of the area in the meals, for example she cooks with meat that we harvested ourselves like deer and moose, as well as seafood from the local docks. Watching people try food that they haven’t eaten or don’t normally eat is always fun and a very good conversation starter. It’s always nice to have a little story with your meal. There are a few things I am trying to incorporate into my meal, for example fry bread, which my mom has been making for us since I was a little kid, and moose meat from last years hunt, in hopes to bring a little bit of the traditional wholesome feel to your meal.

  4. A: One example of good EB I intend to display on the sailing expedition is respecting everyone. Since it is such a small confined space we all must live in for 4 days it will be easy to set off people who are out of their comfort level, and as good EB entails, I will do my best not to set anyone off. I think the biggest challenge the group/groups will face during this challenge is the food. I for one have never prepared a meal plan let alone cooked a balanced meal for people seriously. My expectations are it is going to be a bit like kayaking trip in the since that it will be miserable, but also unlike it, because the work will be constant for everyone because we will have to operate the boats all the time and wont have as much down time. If I had to describe what a typical day would look like based off my expectations, Id say very tired. I am looking forward to hanging out as a group again, and I am concerned about becoming so tired that I empload.

    B. In order to help stop the spread of harmful bacteria, my group and I will wash our hands, cook and freeze meat and bacteria prone foods beforehand, as well as wip down our cooking area thoroughly before and after use.
    a. It was a dark dreary night, I was sick and needed sustenance. What better than a Grilled cheese and Tomato soup. The mix of Ammoniated and buttery flavors were awesome. Simply a can of tomato soup and buttered, toasted grilled cheese american style... One slice white one slice yellow.
    b. What truly made this meal so great was the fact that I was sick and haven't eaten anything of significance in close to days. If you give a starving man a god tier meal like grilled cheesey, he will be happy. If you give a sick man soup, he will be happy. Mix the two and it's like, totally sickomode.
    c. Well, home cook meals always make you feel better and everyone has a “sick meal’ they eat to make them feel better. Ours will incorporate nice and hot homemade maine traditions like cornbread and moose meat so perhaps this will boost the moral of people as it is actual sustenance.

a1. I plan to give people as much space as I can. I think a challenge people will face is not being able to get away from people as easily. Like here on the mainland you can get really far away from someone who is upsetting you. Or like on the island you could walk away and be able to not see someone. On the boats you can’t do that especially because everyone has to pull their own weight.

a2. A typical day should be everyone working to sail the boat, and try to have it running smoothly. I’m looking for just being out there sailing again. I’m concerned that not everyone will like sailing and therefore won’t put a lot of effort into learning how to manage a boat. Basically it’s people not trying is my thing.

b1. Somethings I will use on trip are to use hand sanitiser. Wipe down surfaces and pre cook or freeze some of the food.

b2. One of the best meals I've had was on Hurricane Island. Everything on the island is farm to table they have a greenhouse and get a lot of food from the mainland from local farmers. We had Corn Chowder that night and I think we were eating corn that wasn’t used the rest of the week. I can really describe what it’s like on the island unless you go there, but everyone just gets along. It’s nice to be away from civilization and not have to worry about stuff on the mainland. I’m not really sure how I can make people feel like this because everyone is different.
